Work on phase two of Bahrain Airport passenger terminal project on track

Construction on the second phase of Bahrain International Airport’s new passenger terminal project has been reportedly progressing on schedule.

After completion, the 207,000m² project is expected to boost the airport’s annual passenger handling capacity to 14 million passengers.

A senior official was quoted by Bahrain News Agency as saying: “The project is being implemented as part of the $1.1bn Airport Modernisation Programme (AMP).”

Phase two work is taking place in the eastern part of the existing airport.

In order to maintain safety, the construction site has been blocked, stated the report.

Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications and Bahrain Airport Company (BAC) chairman Kamal bin Ahmed Mohamed said:

“The AMP is the largest investment in Bahrain’s aviation sector for more than 20 years and will usher in a new era for air transport in the Kingdom. 2021 will be a major turning point for the airport.”

He mentioned that the new facility, which will feature the latest technologies and infrastructure, will be four times larger than the current facility.

He added that the new private aviation terminal, serving businessmen and private aircraft owners, will be inaugurated in the upcoming months.

He concluded that the new passenger terminal and other related infrastructure development projects will create a more sustainable and diversified economy, which in turn will support the achievement of Bahrain’s Economic Vision 2030.

In a separate development, International Air Transport Association (IATA) has welcomed the signing of the ‘solidarity and stability’ agreement between Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the UAE and Egypt.

This agreement will allow commercial carriers to resume regional connectivity.
