PLO says will not attend US conference in Bahrain

Saeb Erekat, secretary-general of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO), said Palestinians will not attend the US-organised conference in Manama, Bahrain to address economic aspects of the Trump administration’s Middle East peace plan.

Erekat said the move is “a collective Palestinian decision: from President Mahmoud Abbas, to the PLO committee, to all Palestinian movements, factions, national figures, and public and private sectors”.

The PLO has been hostile from the start to the forthcoming Trump-administration Middle East peace plan, which is being rolled out in a process that includes the meeting in Bahrain.

The plan is expected to be released at the end of June.

Erekat said “no one has the mandate to negotiate on our behalf”.

“Those who want to serve the interests of the Palestinian people must respect this collective position,” he said.

“Full Palestinian economic potential can be reached only with the end of Israeli occupation and with respect for international law and UN resolutions,” he said.
