One hundred blackmail cases in Oman monthly

An average of 100 cases of cyber blackmail were reported monthly during the first half of 2019.

Oman’s Information Technology Authority (ITA) surveyed 607 electronic blackmails between January and last month.

The majority of victims targeted by the cyber blackmails were aged from 15 to 45 years, said the ITA report which also stated that 53 per cent of cases targeted men.

The total number of cases relating to cyber-crimes stood at 1,414 in 2018, compared to 1,479 in 2017.

The ITA has been creating awareness programmes throughout the year and dealing with blackmail complaints in an attempt to eliminate cyber blackmail incidents.

The Oman National Computer Emergency Readiness Team (OCERT) was established to deal with cyber blackmail complaints among other roles.

Under the Omani law, blackmail involves threatening and compelling a person to do any act or wrongdoing against his/her will, with some form of punishment if he/she does not fulfil the request.
