New Bahrain medical city aims to take first patients in 2021

Infrastructure works have been started at the King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Medical City in Bahrain, which was directed to be established by the late King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, who donated SR1 billion to fund the project.

A million sq m plot of land has been allocated for the project in the Southern Governorate as per the instructions of Bahrain King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.

The infrastructure works of the project comes alongside the construction of the Academic Medical Centre at the Medical City, which is expected to be completed within 24 months and will receive patients in early 2021.

The medical centre will include 288 beds while the medical city will also include a number of research centres, as well as a college of medicine, Bahrain News Agency reported.

Dr Khalid Saeed Tabbarah, deputy president of the Arabian Gulf University, said that the infrastructure works include paving the roads, electricity, water and sanitation, and the establishment of sewage and electricity plants.

Saud Consult, which is in charge of the project’s engineering designs, will follow up on the implementation of the infrastructure works as per the instructions of the Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning.

The works will be divided on four phases, with the first stage including the implementation of electricity, water and sewage networks, and firefighting, irrigation and rainwater drainage networks in addition to the construction of internal roads and installation of street lighting.

The second phase will be the construction of a main power plant with a voltage of 66kV to supply the city with electricity while phases 3 and 4 will include the construction of a sewage plant and the development of the roads networks surrounding and leading to the city.

Ahmed Abdulaziz Al Khayat, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning, praised the support of the government to what he described as a vital project.
