Bahrain has waived rents on municipal properties for a three-month period in an effort to mitigate the impact of the coronavirus, according to the Bahrain News Agency (BNA).

In a report quoting Bahrain’s Minister of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban planning, the BNA said that the minister has directed authorities to stop collecting rents for a three-month period in April.

The move follows a wider directive from Prime Minister Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa to support investors and traders amid the pandemic.

The initiative will apply to all users of municipal property such as supermarkets, stands, small shops in malls and municipal shops.

On Wednesday, Bahrain’s governments announce plans to support the wages of 100,000 of all citizens employed in the private sector as part of a $570 million relief package over the next three months.

Employers can apply for assistance for the aid via an online portal that has been launched.
