The MGM-140 Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) surface-to-surface missile can be launched from Multiple Launch Rocket System family of launchers and Lockheed Martin’s M-142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System.
The solid-fueled missiles feature GPS-aided inertial guidance, and carry a 160-247 kg payload, either a blast/fragmentation or hard-target penetration warhead, or anti-personnel, anti-materiel submunitions.
The service life extension program allows for the upgrade of old ATACMS missiles giving them a new 10-year life, and for the production of new missiles.
In February, Poland said it would buy M-142 HIMARS mobile rocket launchers and missiles worth $414 million (€365 million) from the U.S., including the shorter-range Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS) missiles and ATACMS tactical missiles.
The Defense Department announced last August that Lockheed was awarded a $218 million contract for 18 HIMARS launchers, training and spares for Romania.
