Bahrain’s House of Representatives has approved a proposal for exempting working mothers from going to workplaces and allowing them instead to do their jobs online at home, according to a media report.

The motion comes to the benefit of women workers in the kingdom’s public and private sectors to allow them to closely caring for their children at the primary schooling stage, Al Watan newspaper reported.

“The proposal shows keenness of its authors and the assembly on serving public interests,” Bahrain’s Parliament Affairs Minister Ghanim Al Buainain said. “The government is in charge of the public sector, but its authority does not extend to the private sector,” he was quoted as saying.

Meanwhile, MP Bassim Al Maliki voiced support for the motion, saying it is also aimed at helping in success of remote-learning.

“Efforts should be pooled together to ensure success of distant learning. This proposal enables mothers to work online to be close to their children especially those in the primary educational stage,” he added.

The new academic year for public schools started in Bahrain on October 11 with remote learning as a precaution to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus.
